![]() You will soon grab the sword yourself and avenge the death of your parents. You will take the role of Henry, a blacksmith’s son whose family was killed in a brutal war. It was released at the beginning of 2018 and it won the hearts of the gaming community with its realistic setting. Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a medieval role-playing game developed and published by Warhorse Studio. Here are some of the best medieval games to play today. That said, there are plenty of other games in this genre. Some of the most popular medieval games are probably Witcher 3 and Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. The battles are more tactical and it is only marred by small, if extremely annoying factors which you can get over if you put your mind to it.Medieval games refer to games that are based on medieval times or are influenced as such. It is a different experience and one which I find more enjoyable. There are special "battle cards" which take into account historical turns of fate which can reverse the outcome of a battle. There are mini history channel documentaries, although the voice narrating these sounds reminds me of the wizard Saruman (LOTR). If you want an authentic medieval experience, get this game. Opponents can be found on the developer's website where there is a great community. You will have to arrange this privately because Xbox live is devoid of players. This leads to excessive repetition of the first five seconds of drum roll. One thing I find irritating is that whenever you pause a battle to give orders, the music restarts. The campaign map music is really relaxing. This game has excellent atmospheric music. Combat between units is nice to watch but in the army customization faces can look like they suffer from leprosy – peasants' faces actually look like sick. They won't win any awards but the frame-rate on the 360 is very stable. The gameplay is unusual and satisfying in its own way, but not necessarily a Total War lover's cup of tea. These are very cool when used against knights. The French campaign follows on chronologically from the English one and gunpowder weapons become common. You can adjust the appearance of the soldiers but it would have been nice to have more colours available. You can unlock these throughout the game. You can use money, obtained from the side missions, to purchase weapons and armour for your units. ![]() A really interesting feature of the Great Battles is the army customization mode. This looks weird but can be useful for seeing who has the advantage. It is easy to see who is winning a fight because when soldiers are killed a coloured skull floats above them. Combat between units is satisfying to watch although they might have gone a bit overboard with the blood spray and sparks. Unfortunately, the battles are sometimes too streamlined and your units can start off as close as 100ft from the enemy which is somewhat annoying. You can set up complex flanking maneuvers right from the deployment stage and it streamlines the battles. ![]() It is quite satisfying to watch your army advance in real time after having set several waypoints for your units to follow. ![]() This is especially useful as the game only allows you to give an order to one unit at a time and maneuvering an entire army can take some time. The game is paused when you give orders, but you can choose as and when to pause it. The ordering system is actually quite unique as it is semi turn-based. The game itself is fought on an invisible grid of squares, each holding a unit of up to 32 men. Each of these battles is fought on a 3d tactical map, which can vary in size from ridiculously tiny to a few square miles. Both of these have 16 historical battles and an assortment of optional side-missions to complete. There are two main campaigns: an English campaign and a French campaign. The game simulates the Hundred Years War and the campaign mode consists of a map of northern France on which available missions appear throughout the game. Personally I find it a breath of fresh air. I have seen several reviews for this game which say, "If you liked Total War you'll like this." This is misleading - this game is completely different. By muffinmandies | Review Date: JHaving played all the Total War games to date, I was apprehensive to say the least about trying a game from a smaller developer, but I bit the bullet and gave this one a try.
